TV and media units across Haringey: what to expect

The screen size comes first. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy. Viewing height matters too: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. Most enquiries start with a tangle of wires behind the TV and boxes with no ventilation; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment, and where the sockets are now.
  2. We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in.
  5. Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

What goes into your quote

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

Around Tottenham

Our area takes in the homes around Northumberland Park Community School, No.8 Tottenham pub and Bruce Castle Park and the streets around them. Other local landmarks include The John Loughborough School (less than half a mile south), Church of St Mary the Virgin (under half a mile north-east) and The Mulberry Primary School (less than half a mile south-east). Tottenham has its own railway station: Bruce Grove station. Well-known places in the area include Markfield Beam Engine and Museum (1.1 miles south) and North Middlesex University Hospital (1.1 miles north).

Homes across Haringey and their living rooms

From Tottenham, Noel Park and Wood Green to the quieter streets, homes across Haringey range from period terraces to modern flats. Period rooms tend to have alcoves for TV and media units, while newer rooms suit a full wall of shelving and cupboards. Every piece is made for the room it’s going into.

The biggest shares of homes in Haringey were built before 1919 (about 54%) and since 2000 (about 13%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 54% of homes in Haringey were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Older houses normally have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit a TV in the middle and media storage either side. About 24% of households in Haringey live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, so a van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Tottenham: Near listed buildings like Tower to South West of Bruce Castle, less than half a mile west of the centre of Tottenham, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near Church of St Mary the Virgin, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How big the furniture is

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Helping us understand the room

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What the furniture needs to hold

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • Let us know about parking and access during the design visit
  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf

Dust collects around equipment and vents, so clean them now and then. It keeps air moving.

Label cables when you set things up, so changes later are simple.

Honest limits

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment

Questions we are often asked

Can landlords use you for a rented flat?

Yes. Landlords and letting agents can arrange a design visit in the same way as anyone else. We will need access agreed with any tenants for the visit and for fitting day.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What materials do you use?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. The materials are named in your written quote.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a written quote once we have measured up.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
