Duckett's Green TV and Media Units
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on TV and media units in Duckett's Green starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Space for a soundbar and speakers
- Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
- A TV that looks out of place in the room

What prompts TV and media units in Duckett's Green
Games, controllers and remotes need a home. Cupboards and drawers in the unit keep them in one place, and open shelves hold what’s used every day.
Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:
- Wasted space around the screen
- Cables trailing across the wall
- A cabinet that traps heat
- Equipment with nowhere proper to go
Bruce Castle, about 1.2 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

TV and media units in Duckett's Green: what you get
Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar usually sits just below the TV, while larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Closing speakers in a cupboard muffles them. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and equipment with nowhere proper to go.
With a large share of homes around Duckett's Green built before 1919, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What happens on fitting day
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
- We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run.
- A written quote follows for the unit.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
- We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.
Before fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
Ask for a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Practical tips
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
- Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
- Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
- Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen
Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.
Leave any new socket or wiring work to your electrician, and don’t overload sockets.

Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Common questions about TV and media units
Is parking a problem for fitting in Duckett's Green?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.
Do you cover homes near Hornsey station?
Yes, homes across Haringey and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
We plan the route in at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Screen sizes change, and a stand that suits today’s set may look small with the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind, so the unit lasts longer. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.
