TV and media units in Kenton: what you get
Set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers give off heat, so equipment cannot simply be shut in a closed cupboard. Ventilation is planned into the design. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. Most enquiries start with a big screen that dominates the wall and boxes with no ventilation, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Kenton, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for TV and media units. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs, with any new sockets left to your electrician.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Fitting day, step by step
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind.
- We visit to measure the wall and go through the design. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
- We send a quote in writing for the unit, ready for you to check.
- The unit is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.
Before we arrive
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
Arranging a design visit
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, get in touch through our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

The problems TV and media units solve
Equipment on the floor is another reason. A unit gives every box its own space, with air to keep it cool.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Leads that show from every angle
- Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
- Wasted space around the screen
- Bought furniture that does not suit the room
For a flat near Kenton station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
What to check before you book
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
TV and media units for homes in Kenton
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Kenton were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 84%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 7%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Kenton is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Kenton (about 84%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, which shape where TV and media units go.
For a family home near St Gregory's Catholic Science College, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary and Parish Hall, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Questions from Kenton
Can you make TV and media units for a home in Kenton?
Yes, we work across Brent, Kenton included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Kenton?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
What happens at the design visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Will the cables be hidden?
We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.
Do TV units need ventilation?
Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go. Keep the vents clear once it’s in use.

What it’s made from
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribing trims the edges on site to follow the wall, closing the gaps.
Birch plywood
A wide shelf under the TV needs stiffness. Birch plywood helps.
What TV and media units can’t fix
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Connecting the TV signal or internet
- New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
- Configuring the TV and sound system
Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What goes into it
- Hand-painted finish
- Cable routes
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Ventilated cabinets
- Spray-painted finish
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
