TV and media units for homes in Neasden

Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar usually sits just below the TV, while larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Closing speakers in a cupboard muffles them, so we plan open spaces for them. If you are living with somewhere to keep games tidy and standard units leaving gaps, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In an area like Neasden, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits TV and media units along that wall. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned at the measuring visit.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Where other trades come in

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Connecting the TV signal or internet
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Ventilated cabinets

What happens on fitting day

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air.
  3. A written quote follows for the unit.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Starting with a design visit

To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a written quote follows.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

Some closed off-the-shelf cabinets have little ventilation. Ventilation is designed in where equipment sits. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Neasden?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Brent Cross West station?

Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you add sockets behind the TV?

Your electrician does that. It’s best done before the unit goes in.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go. Keep the vents clear once it’s in use.

Built-in living-room furniture in Neasden

About 40% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Neasden went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 33% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Neasden include Church of St Mary (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south, and Church of St Francis (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Neasden (about 40%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and TV and media units are planned around both.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Fenton House, about 2.9 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. Living in a block of flats near Brent Cross West station? Then TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors can hide boxes and clutter and are planned with ventilation where needed.

Birch plywood

A wide shelf under the TV needs stiffness. Birch plywood, sized for the span, keeps it flat.

Why people ask for TV and media units in Neasden

Upgrading to a bigger screen is a common trigger. The old stand no longer suits it, or the screen takes over the room. Shelves and cupboards around the screen make it sit better in the room.

Here’s what TV and media units can help with:

  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go
  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • Nowhere good for speakers
  • A cabinet that traps heat

If you live in a period home close to St Catherine's Church Neasden with St Paul, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
