TV and Media Units in Chelsea

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make TV and media units for homes in Chelsea, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Wasted space around the screen
  • A TV stand that does not fit the wall
  • Speakers muffled behind doors

How we price TV and media units

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How square the room is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The width and height of the space

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

What to send when you contact us

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it helps to send:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, use our contact form.

TV and media units for homes in Chelsea

Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes and the cable route behind it. If the TV stands on the unit instead, the top is sized and positioned for it, with the cables kept out of sight. People usually come to us about somewhere to keep games tidy and a TV that looks out of place in the room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

With a large share of homes around Chelsea built before 1919, lots of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed, and long shelves are sized so they don’t sag under books.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting works for TV and media units

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Shelves

Speakers and books suit open shelves, while cupboards hide the rest.

Birch plywood

We often use birch plywood for carcasses and drawers. The edge can be painted or left as a detail.

Questions from Chelsea

How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in Chelsea?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. TV and media units are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

My home in Chelsea is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

How do you hide the TV cables?

We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Access panels make future changes easy without taking the unit apart. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through.

Built-in living-room furniture in Chelsea

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Chelsea were built before 1919 (about 68%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 13%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 337 entries within half a mile of the centre of Chelsea. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Kensington and Chelsea included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Chelsea. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to London Victoria station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Burton’s Court? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. Carlyle's House, about 0.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Chelsea is within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, about 2 miles north-west of Kensington. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Chelsea included. We cover places right across Kensington and Chelsea.

Every address in SW3, SW10, SW1X and SW1W is covered for TV and media units. You will find streets here like Markham Square, Wellington Square and Tedworth Square, and homes on each of them are within our area for TV and media units. Nearby, we also make TV and media units in Brompton (1 mile north), South Kensington (1 mile west), Little Chelsea (1 mile south-west), Belgravia (1 mile north-east) and World's End (1 mile south-west). Across the rest of Kensington and Chelsea, our area takes in Kensington (2 miles north-west), Notting Hill (2 miles north-west), Notting Dale (3 miles north-west), Holland Park (2 miles north-west), Bayswater (2 miles north-west) and Kensal Town (3 miles north-west).

Other landmarks nearby include Harrods (0.7 miles north) and Berkshire & Westminster Dragoons Museum (less than half a mile east). Open spaces near Chelsea include Battersea Park Lake.

What TV and media units can’t fix

Not everything around TV and media units is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
  • Plastering or decorating around the unit
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
