How we make TV and media units for Victoria
Hiding the cables is often the main aim. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with holes, channels and access panels so leads can be added or changed later. The routes are ours, while any wiring is for your electrician. People normally come to us about speakers muffled behind doors and a TV that looks out of place in the room, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the chimney breast tends to survive even when the fireplace itself has been blocked up. That matters around Victoria, as a large share of the homes there were built before 1919. The recesses either side take TV and media units scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, leases and landlords
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.
Living-room storage in Victoria
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Victoria were built before 1919 (about 48%) and since 2000 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Victoria include Buckingham Palace Riding School (Grade I), under half a mile north, and Church of St Barnabas (Grade I), under half a mile south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. All of London, Westminster included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Victoria, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access during the design visit.
The wider area includes historic houses like Buckingham Palace, about 0.4 miles north. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If you live near Green Park, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.
Victoria is about 1 mile north of City of Westminster, in the City of Westminster. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Victoria is part of that. Our Westminster coverage includes Victoria and the places around it.
Postcode districts we cover here for TV and media units: SW1V, SW1P and SW1X. Streets in the area include Eaton Lane, Gerald Road and Wilton Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for TV and media units. The A202 and A302 runs close to Victoria, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. We also cover Belgravia (1 mile north-west), Pimlico (1 mile south-east), Westminster (1 mile north-east), Millbank (1 mile north-east) and Brompton (1 mile west). We also make TV and media units in nearby places like Marylebone (2 miles north), Covent Garden (2 miles north-east), Aldwych (2 miles north-east), Paddington Green (2 miles north-west), Paddington (2 miles north-west) and Connaught Village (2 miles north-west).
What’s near Victoria
In Victoria, that includes homes near Westminster Cathedral Choir School, London Library and Wetherspoons pub and the streets around them. Victoria has its own railway station: London Victoria station. A little further out are Harrods (0.9 miles west) and Westminster Children's Hospital (close by, under half a mile south-east). Open spaces near Victoria include St. James's Park Lake.
What happens on fitting day
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so TV and media units are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit, and where the sockets are now.
- We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
- The unit is made in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.
Preparing the room
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
Arranging a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, use our contact form.
Advice
Neighbourhoods near Victoria
What else we make in Victoria
Do you need TV and media units in Victoria?
Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. Building it into the alcoves or around the chimney breast makes it part of the room.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- A screen at the wrong height
- Empty alcoves beside the TV
- Equipment with nowhere proper to go
- A TV stand that does not fit the wall
If your home is one of the older houses near St. Michael's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
What to check before you book
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- How parking will work on your street
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
Common questions about TV and media units
Do you make TV and media units for homes in Victoria?
Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London, and Victoria is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Victoria?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Do you move sockets for a TV unit?
Your electrician does that. It is best done before the unit goes in, and we plan cut-outs and cable routes around the sockets.
Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?
If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position and the cable route behind it. The bracket needs a sound wall so we check the wall at the design visit.
How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?
We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. Each box should have its own space.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
Caring for painted furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
- Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
- Think about which things need to be seen by a remote
Use the access panels and cable routes when you add or change leads. It keeps everything neat.
Heavy equipment is best kept low, with the weight spread across shelves.
