Wall beds in Chelsea: what you get

We fit wall beds in Chelsea and across London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, then a quote in writing. We make everything in our workshop and fit it in your home. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you will know ahead of time. People typically come to us about a home office that also sleeps guests and a bed that looks like cupboards by day; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. That layout is worth knowing around Chelsea, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast, leaving the breast itself clear. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Why bespoke in Chelsea?

You can buy wall bed units off the shelf, often for less, and they can work in a simple space. They’re made in standard sizes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What you get with us

  • Work across the whole of London
  • Built around your room
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Scribed to uneven walls

Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf or what to look for in a quote.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

Advice

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Bedroom storage in Chelsea

About 68% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Chelsea went up before 1919, and about 13% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Chelsea, 20 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Kensington and Chelsea is inside it. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Chelsea. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Luke, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live in a period home close to Former Welsh Congregational Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Living in a block of flats near London Victoria station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Common questions about wall beds

Do you make wall beds for homes in Chelsea?

Yes. Chelsea is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Kensington and Chelsea and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How long does fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

That varies with the size of the bed. At the design visit we measure the room and check there’s enough space in front.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
