Kensington TV and Media Units

Built-in TV walls and media cabinets, for homes in Kensington. We make each piece in our workshop and fit it in your home, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • Speakers muffled behind doors

TV and media units designed for your room

Could you do it yourself?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

About our TV and media units in Kensington

If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit, with the cables kept out of sight. If your home has a cabinet that traps heat and somewhere to keep games tidy, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

With a large share of homes around Kensington built before 1919, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they don’t sag under books.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Is bespoke worth it?

TVs keep getting bigger, and a stand chosen for today’s set may not suit the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind, so the unit lasts longer. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What you get with us

  • Saturdays by prior arrangement
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote

Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf or what to look for in a quote.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Think about whether you will upgrade the screen
  • Think about which things need to be seen by a remote

Once your equipment is in, check that it is not running hot. Don’t block the gaps and openings left for air with cables or clutter.

Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit.

What happens on fitting day

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the design visit.

  1. You describe the TV wall and your equipment, from set-top boxes to speakers.
  2. We come to measure and talk through screen height, speakers and cables, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. If anything in it is unclear, ask us.
  4. Once you are happy, the unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable routes planned in.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, ready for your equipment, with the cable routes left clear.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, use our contact form.

Built-in living-room furniture in Kensington

In the neighbourhood around Kensington, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 69%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 10%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Kensington, 21 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. All of London, Kensington and Chelsea included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Kensington fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Barnabas, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a flat close to Kensington Olympia station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live near Holland Park, TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

Kensington is in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Anywhere in Kensington, the process is the same: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. Across Kensington and Chelsea, we cover Kensington, along with the rest of the borough.

Design visits and fitting in W11, W8, W14 and SW7 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Kensington High Street, Edwardes Square and Somerset Square, along with the roads around them, for TV and media units and any of our other fitted furniture. We also cover Holland Park (1 mile north), Notting Hill (1 mile north), Shepherd's Bush (1 mile west), Notting Dale (1 mile north) and White City (1 mile north-west). Elsewhere in Kensington and Chelsea, we also cover Brompton (2 miles east), Chelsea (2 miles south-east), World's End (2 miles south-east) and North Kensington (2 miles north-west).

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.
