TV and media units in Notting Dale: what you get

Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. For a living room in Notting Dale, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a cabinet that traps heat and a TV that looks out of place in the room.

Around Notting Dale, a large share of homes date from before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Main rooms in houses like these usually have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, and those alcoves are the natural home for TV and media units. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet, then cut neatly around the skirting and any picture rail or cornice.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit.

Getting ready for fitting day

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Do you need TV and media units in Notting Dale?

Most people come to us because of the cables. Leads trail from the TV to the boxes, the sockets and the speakers. Built-in units give cables somewhere to go.

Here’s what TV and media units can help with:

  • Speakers muffled behind doors
  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • A TV that looks out of place in the room
  • Standard units leaving gaps

For a family home near Thomas Jones Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

What to check before you book

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Common questions about TV and media units

How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in Notting Dale?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. TV and media units are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Notting Dale?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

It depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The unit is made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Can a TV unit hold speakers?

Speakers and soundbars get open shelves sized for them. Closed doors muffle sound, so we leave them open.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf TV units come in a few set colours. We paint ours in the colour you choose. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.
