Living-room carpentry in Bankside: local notes

About 48% of the homes in the streets around Bankside went up since 2000, and about 19% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Bankside, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Benet (Grade I), less than half a mile north, and College of Arms (Grade I), under half a mile north. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 48% of homes around Bankside were built since 2000, well above the figure for Southwark as a whole, about 28%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.

If you live near Bernie Spain Gardens, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If you live in a period home close to St Mary Mounthaw, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 0.6 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

How we make TV and media units for Bankside

Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If the TV stands on the unit instead, the top is sized and positioned for it. If your home has a screen at the wrong height and a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a home built since 2000, the aerial point and sockets are normally already fixed in place. A good number of homes around Bankside went up since 2000, so TV and media units are typically designed around what’s already there. If you want an extra socket, that is for your electrician.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

What affects the price in Bankside

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

What we need to know

These details help when you contact us:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

What TV and media units cannot fix

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Plastering or decorating around the unit
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Questions we are often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bankside?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in Bankside?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
  • Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Note the screen size you have or plan to buy

Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.

Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear when you add equipment.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, so it’s good for shelves that carry equipment and speakers.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it helps to let us know at the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. You get a written quote covering the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it’s in and is easy to touch up later.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
