Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

TV and media units for homes in Southwark

Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall, such as behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That job is for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. Ideally it is done before the unit goes in. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are boxes with no ventilation and cables trailing across the wall.

Many homes around Southwark were built since 2000, and newer homes rarely come with any built-in shelving or media storage. TV and media units can be planned around where the sockets and aerial points already are, with cable routes built in. Plasterboard on studs takes fitted furniture well, as long as the fixings suit it.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

FAQs: TV and media units in Southwark

My home in Southwark is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Southwark?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do TV units need ventilation?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, with open backs, gaps or openings. We give each box its own space and you can check the maker’s guidance on clearances.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How do I get a quote for TV and media units in Southwark?

Simply send us a few details through our contact form. It’s useful to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, followed by a written quote.

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are covered while we work.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

How to prepare

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Tell us about parking near your home

Arranging a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for a smooth, factory-like finish that suits clean, modern lines.

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the unit and hides a sloping floor. Its height can match the skirting board.

TV and media units in Southwark: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Southwark were built since 2000 (about 46%) and before 1919 (about 17%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Southwark, 37 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. For fitting in Southwark, a van normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

Living in a block of flats near Elephant & Castle station? Then TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The George Inn, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For an older house near Borough Welsh Congregational Chapel, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How square the room is
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

What to send when you contact us

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
