TV and media units for your home in Forest Gate

TV and media units in Forest Gate

Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes and the cable route behind it. If the TV stands on the unit instead, the top is sized and positioned for it, with the cables kept out of sight. People usually come to us about a big screen that dominates the wall and boxes and consoles on the floor, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A large share of the homes around Forest Gate were built before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Houses of that age normally have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, which gives TV and media units an obvious place to go. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet, then cut neatly around the skirting and any picture rail or cornice.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

FAQs: TV and media units in Forest Gate

I live near Wanstead Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you fit TV and media units to the uneven walls of an older house in Forest Gate?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so check it or ask your managing agent.

How do I get started?

Simply use our contact form. It helps to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote in writing.

Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?

The unit can be planned either way. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables, and if it stands on the unit we size the top for it.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. You get a written quote covering the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Ask for a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Long shelves under a screen need to stay straight. Birch plywood, sized for the span, keeps it flat.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you see the colour in the room’s own light. Joins and scribed edges are painted at the same time.

TV and media units for homes in Forest Gate

About 68% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Forest Gate went up before 1919, and about 11% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of Forest Gate is within about a quarter of a mile of the Woodgrange Estate, Forest Gate Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home in Forest Gate is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

Near listed buildings like Emmanuel Church, under half a mile south of the centre of Forest Gate, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near A Radical Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a flat near Wanstead Park station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Where other trades come in

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
  • Plastering or decorating around the unit
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow

Dust collects around equipment and vents, so a quick clean now and then helps. Clear vents keep equipment cooler.

Leave any new socket or wiring work to your electrician, and do not overload sockets.
