TV and media units in East Village

The screen size comes first. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you are likely to upgrade, with room around it so it doesn’t look squeezed. The height of the screen matters as well: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space for a soundbar and speakers and boxes and consoles on the floor.

Many homes around East Village were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are flats in newer developments. Living rooms in newer homes can be compact, so shallower units and wall-hung cupboards keep the floor open. Boxing for pipes and risers is common in newer homes, and the furniture can be designed around it.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
  • Note the size of each box and speaker
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move

Doors can settle a little once the unit is in use. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.

Avoid piling devices on one shelf. Each one needs space around it.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought units often have a single cable gap, but the wires still show between the stand, the wall and the screen. We plan the cable routes into the design, with access panels for changes later. Large off-the-shelf pieces can make a small room feel smaller, whereas fitted pieces painted to suit the walls sit back into the space.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

Common questions about TV and media units

Do you cover homes near Stratford International station?

Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

My home in East Village is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can you add sockets behind the TV?

Electrical work isn’t something we do. Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.

Can the TV unit fit a bigger TV later?

We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind so the unit suits your next set. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The fitting depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Living-room storage in East Village

In the neighbourhood around East Village, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 68%) and before 1919 (about 12%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of East Village. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 74% of households around East Village live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Newham as a whole, about 44%, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

Sutton House, about 1.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The Theatre Royal, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For a family home near Chobham Academy, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

East Village is in the London Borough of Newham, about 2 miles south-east of Plaistow. Whether your home in East Village is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. East Village is one of 26 places on our list for Newham.

How fitting works for TV and media units

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the unit, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Arranging a design visit

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Pricing TV and media units in East Village

Several things affect the price:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit.

Before the design visit

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
