Little Ilford homes and TV and media units
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Little Ilford were built before 1919 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Little Ilford. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Around Little Ilford, about 58% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Newham as a whole, about 37%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary the Virgin, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Little Ilford, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For families living near Sir John Heron Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. For an older house near St Michael's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

TV and media units for homes in Little Ilford
Set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers give off heat, so sealing equipment in a cupboard is not a good idea. Ventilation is planned into the design, with open backs, gaps or vented doors where they’re needed. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves beside the TV and somewhere to keep games tidy.
Victorian and Edwardian houses were built with solid brick outside walls, and internal walls may be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around Little Ilford date from before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how TV and media units are fixed. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings, especially behind loaded shelves.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

From workshop to your room
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so TV and media units are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit, and where the sockets are now.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.
Before fitting day
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Keep pets in another room while we work

Flat-pack or bespoke?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
Caring for painted furniture
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
- Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
- Let us know about access early
- Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned rather than drilling new holes. It keeps everything neat.
Avoid piling devices on one shelf. Give each its own space.
Questions from Little Ilford
My house in Little Ilford is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
I live near Manor Park station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
How do I get a quote?
Just get in touch through our contact form. It helps to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote in writing.
Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?
That’s the aim, and it’s planned from the start. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later without taking the unit apart. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.
How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?
Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go. Keep the vents clear once it’s in use.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
An off-the-shelf TV stand is cheaper and quick to buy. A stand is also simple to swap when technology moves on. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
