TV and Media Units in East Ham

Thinking about TV and media units in East Ham? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Cables trailing across the wall
  • Boxes with no ventilation

TV and media units designed for your room

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

TV and media units in East Ham

Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. If you’re planning a TV unit in East Ham, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. If your home has alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste and a screen at the wrong height, that is what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and they set the lines that TV and media units have to meet. A large share of the housing around East Ham went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about during the design visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Questions from East Ham

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in East Ham?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is parking a problem for fitting in East Ham?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

What materials do you use?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, and the quote says which is used where.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

Do you move sockets for a TV unit?

We do not do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen
  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets

Dust collects around equipment and vents, so a quick clean now and then helps. It keeps air moving.

Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.

  1. You describe the TV wall and your equipment.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. If anything in it is unclear, ask us.
  4. Once you are happy, the unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable routes planned in.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, ready for your equipment.

Before we arrive

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice

East Ham homes and TV and media units

The biggest shares of homes in the area around East Ham were built before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of East Ham include Church of St Mary Magdalene (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south, and Public Library (Grade II), less than half a mile north. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 55% of homes in the streets around East Ham were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). In houses of that age, the chimney breast often becomes the TV wall, with cupboards in the alcoves for set-top boxes and speakers.

If you live near Beckton District Park, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For families living near St Michael's Catholic Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

How it is made

Shelves

Each shelf is planned for what will sit on it, with space around for air.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for panels, doors and the faces you see.

Pricing TV and media units in East Ham

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The internal fittings
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

Getting in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.
