What prompts TV and media units in Manor Park

Most people come to us because of the cables. Cables run everywhere, from the screen to the boxes and the wall and nothing off the shelf hides them all. A built-in unit gives them a planned route.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers
  • Leads that show from every angle

If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

About our TV and media units in Manor Park

Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall, like behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That is work for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. Ideally it is done before the unit goes in. Typical reasons to get in touch are somewhere to keep games tidy and nowhere good for speakers, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A large share of the homes around Manor Park were built before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Main rooms in houses like these normally have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, and those alcoves are the natural home for TV and media units. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base, then cut neatly around the skirting and any picture rail or cornice.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Living-room carpentry in Manor Park: local notes

In the streets around Manor Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Manor Park. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Terraced houses are home to about 38% of households in the neighbourhood around Manor Park, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, and TV and media units are made to those widths.

For a family home near Sir John Heron Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. The wider area includes historic houses such as Valentines Mansion, about 1.6 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Manor Park is part of the London Borough of Newham, about 2 miles south-west of Plaistow. We can visit homes in Manor Park on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Our work takes in places right across Newham.

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so TV and media units are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and your equipment.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it’s useful to have them in mind early.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Getting a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Advice

What it costs

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How big the furniture is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Where you live, with the postcode

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What we do not do

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish

Questions from Manor Park

Can you fit TV and media units to the uneven walls of an older house in Manor Park?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Manor Park?

Yes, Manor Park is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Newham and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can a TV unit hold speakers?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar, and larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can you add sockets behind the TV?

We do not do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Let us know about access early
  • Note the size of each box and speaker
  • Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it

Dust collects around equipment and vents, so clean them now and then. It keeps air moving.

Heavy equipment is best kept low, with the weight spread across shelves.
