TV and media units in Canning Town, Newham
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make TV and media units for homes in Canning Town, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A big screen that dominates the wall
- Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
- Games, controllers and remotes everywhere

Tips worth knowing
Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
- Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
- Talk to your electrician early about sockets
- Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them.
Leave any new socket or wiring work to your electrician, and don’t overload sockets.

The screen size comes first. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you’re likely to upgrade. The height of the screen matters as well: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. Most enquiries start with clutter around the TV and speakers muffled behind doors; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
A large share of the homes around Canning Town date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely come with any built-in shelving or media storage. TV and media units can be planned around where the sockets and aerial points already are, with cable routes built in. Plasterboard on studs takes fitted furniture well, as long as the fixings suit it.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

When is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

TV and media units in Canning Town: local notes
About 38% of the homes in the area around Canning Town went up since 2000, and about 24% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Canning Town include Warehouse K (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and Warehouse W (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.
Close to Keir Hardie Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. For an older house near St Cedd's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a flat close to Custom House station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

FAQs: TV and media units in Canning Town
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Canning Town?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
My home in Canning Town is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Will the cables be hidden?
That is the aim, and it is planned from the start. Access panels make future changes easy without taking the unit apart. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Is bespoke worth it?
Bespoke furniture takes longer than buying from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you are renting or moving soon, a standalone stand may suit you better. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often doesn’t get them. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

What we do not do
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Structural changes to the wall
- Painting the walls and ceiling
- Connecting and setting up your equipment

How fitting works for TV and media units
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so let us know what applies at the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
- We send a quote in writing.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment.
Before fitting day
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
