TV and media units in Upper Edmonton, Enfield

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make TV and media units for homes in Upper Edmonton, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • Empty alcoves beside the TV
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers

Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen. Closing speakers in a cupboard muffles them, so we leave open bays for them. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are nowhere good for speakers and a big screen that dominates the wall.

Every room has its fixed points: the window, the door, the radiator and the sockets. In any home in Upper Edmonton, those set the layout for TV and media units before anything else. Then the cupboards, shelves and any space for a screen are arranged for how you use the room.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the TV unit we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it is finished.

TV and media units for homes in Upper Edmonton

About 29% of the homes in the area around Upper Edmonton went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 26% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Upper Edmonton is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

If you live near Pymmes Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Percy House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Pricing TV and media units in Upper Edmonton

Several things affect the price:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How big the furniture is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • How you want to use the space
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Where you live, with the postcode

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Decide where you will sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets
  • Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it

Dust collects around equipment and vents, so a quick clean now and then helps. Clear vents keep equipment cooler.

Leave any new socket or wiring work to your electrician.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what applies during the design visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

How to get a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

Flats, leases and landlords

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

What TV and media units can’t fix

Not everything around TV and media units is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Common questions about TV and media units

Is Upper Edmonton in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London, and Upper Edmonton is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Upper Edmonton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

The time on site depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
