Wall beds in Gordon Hill

Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. We can design a wall with a fold-down bed and a desk or shelving around it, without the bed taking over. We can allow for cables to the desk, though any new sockets are for your electrician. Most enquiries start with a hobby room with a bed for guests and somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Post-war bedrooms tend to be simple rectangles, often with the window on the outside wall and the door near a corner. Many homes around Gordon Hill date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, so fitted furniture can often take a whole wall without awkward cuts. We plan the space in front first, so everything opens fully.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Bedroom storage in Gordon Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Gordon Hill were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 30%) and before 1919 (about 25%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 22 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Gordon Hill. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. About 30% of homes in the streets around Gordon Hill were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, fixed to suit the wall.

If you live in a period home close to St Michael & All Angels, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. If you live near Enfield Town Park, wall beds are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. Near listed buildings like St Faith's Cottage, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Gordon Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

What it costs

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

What to send when you contact us

These details help when you contact us:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

How fitting works for wall beds

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so let us know what applies at the measuring visit. On the day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how often the bed is used. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and discuss the design.
  3. We send a quote setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are built in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Advice

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

We can hand paint the cabinet in your home after fitting. Marks are easy to touch in.

Moisture-resistant MDF

A painted MDF front looks crisp, so it suits the doors on the bed cabinet.

Your questions about wall beds in Gordon Hill

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Gordon Hill?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you make wall beds for a home in Gordon Hill?

Yes. Gordon Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Enfield and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so check it or ask your managing agent.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What space does a fold-down bed take up?

You need clear floor in front of the cabinet for the bed to fold down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We check the space when we measure, so the design works.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
