TV and media units in Keston, Bromley

About our TV and media units in Keston

Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. For a living room in Keston, we start with a design visit to measure and talk through what you use. Typical reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves beside the TV and a screen at the wrong height, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Keston, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan TV and media units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light, though every room is measured first.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

When you need someone else

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Plastering or decorating around the unit

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Cable routes
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You describe the TV wall and your equipment, from set-top boxes to speakers.
  2. We come to measure and talk through screen height, speakers and cables.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. Once you’re happy, the unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place.

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, use our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Questions we are often asked

I live near Hayes (Kent) station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Is there room for a soundbar?

Speakers and soundbars get open shelves sized for them. Closed doors muffle sound.

How long will the fitting take?

The fitting depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

The problems TV and media units solve

Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. A built-in unit around the chimney breast lets it sit more quietly.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go
  • Standard units leaving gaps

If your children go to Keston Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

TV and media units in Keston: local notes

About 33% of the homes in the streets around Keston went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 31% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Keston include Keston Windmill (Grade I), less than half a mile south, and Leafy Grove House (Grade II), under half a mile south. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Keston, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access during the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Keston Parish Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Close to South Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Keston is part of the London Borough of Bromley, about 4 miles north-east of Orpington. Wherever you are in Keston, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Keston is one of the places in Bromley where we make TV and media units, and the borough has 49 places on our list.

Design visits and fitting in BR2 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If you are just outside Keston, we also cover Nash (1 mile west), Farthing Street (1 mile south-east), Locksbottom (1 mile north-east), Leaves Green (2 miles south) and Hayes (2 miles north-west). Other parts of Bromley we cover include Orpington (4 miles north-east), Bromley (3 miles north), Beckenham (4 miles north-west), St Mary Cray (4 miles north-east), Chislehurst (4 miles north) and Penge (5 miles north-west).

How we price TV and media units

There is no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How big the furniture is
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking near your home

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What we need to know

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the unit and takes up an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Birch plywood

For carcasses and drawer boxes, birch plywood is hard-wearing. Its layered edge can be painted or shown.
