TV and media units in Farthing Street
The screen size comes first. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy, with room around it so it doesn’t look squeezed. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. If you are living with boxes and consoles on the floor and nowhere good for speakers, TV and media units made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, which matters around Farthing Street, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. A long through room gives TV and media units a whole wall to work with. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the TV unit we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it is finished.

The problems TV and media units solve
Boxes, consoles and routers on the floor are a familiar sight. A unit gives every box its own space, with air to keep it cool, and keeps the floor clear.
Requests we hear often include:
- A big screen that dominates the wall
- Cables trailing across the wall
- Clutter around the TV
- Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
Close to South Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.
What to check before you book
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- How parking will work on your street
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
Looking after your furniture
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
- Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
- Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
- Let us know about access early
Clean the paintwork with a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.
Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear when you add equipment.
Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish suits a TV unit in a period room. You choose the colour.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Wide panels around a screen need to stay flat. MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish.
Questions from Farthing Street
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Farthing Street?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Can you make TV and media units for a home in Farthing Street?
Yes. Farthing Street is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Can you add sockets behind the TV?
Your electrician does that. Ideally it is done before fitting.
What affects the price of TV and media units?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment, and where the sockets are now.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, for you to look over.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear.
Before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
How to get a quote
Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
Living-room storage in Farthing Street
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Farthing Street were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 31%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Farthing Street, Historic England’s list includes Farthing Street Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east, and Orange Court Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Bromley has its own. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.
If your children go to Downe Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. The wider area includes historic houses such as Down House, about 1 mile south. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
