Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Configuring the TV and sound system

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

TV and media units for homes in Hayes

A built-in TV unit gives the screen, the boxes, the speakers and the cables one planned home. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. For a living room in Hayes, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. People normally come to us about space for a soundbar and speakers and a big screen that dominates the wall, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so TV and media units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Hayes, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the TV unit we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Looking after your furniture

These points come up often when people plan TV and media units. They help before and after fitting:

  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit

Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line them up again.

Heavy equipment is best kept low, with the weight spread across shelves.

Do you need TV and media units in Hayes?

The most common reason is a mess of wires. Cables run everywhere, from the screen to the boxes and the wall. Built-in units give cables somewhere to go.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Speakers muffled behind doors
  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • Clutter around the TV
  • Wasted space around the screen

For a flat near Hayes (Kent) station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You send us a few details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, with openings for cables and air.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

How to prepare

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Advice

Hayes homes and TV and media units

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 72% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Hayes, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hayes include The Rectory (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south, and Hayes Grove Cottage (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Bromley is inside it. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Hayes is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Bromley Palace, about 2 miles north. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. For an older house near St Mary the Virgin, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Hayes is in the London Borough of Bromley, about 4 miles east of Orpington. Design visits and fitting in Hayes can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. We list Hayes among 49 places we cover in Bromley.

Common questions about TV and media units

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hayes?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Is Hayes in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes. Hayes is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?

If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position, with a route for the cables. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket.

What if I buy a larger TV?

If you are likely to upgrade, we can leave room for it. It helps to know the size you’re thinking of so the space and cable routes suit it.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
