TV and media units in Longlands: what you get

Media equipment warms up as it runs, so sealing equipment in a cupboard isn’t a good idea. Ventilation is planned into the design, with open backs, gaps or vented doors where they’re needed. It is worth checking each maker’s guidance on clearances. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are games, controllers and remotes everywhere and space for a soundbar and speakers.

In an area like Longlands, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits TV and media units along that wall. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move

Clean the paintwork with a soft cloth that is barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.

Label cables when you set things up to make future changes easier.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

Common questions about TV and media units

Do you cover homes near New Eltham station?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Longlands?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do you move sockets for a TV unit?

Electrical work is not something we do. Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.

Is there room for a soundbar?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen. Bring the sizes to the design visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Honest limits

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Structural changes to the wall

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

TV and media units in Longlands: local notes

In the streets around Longlands, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Chislehurst Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Longlands. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Bexley sets its own rules. Where a street in Longlands is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.

For an older house near Christ Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Close to Waring Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If you live in a flat close to New Eltham station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and go through the design. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it’s useful to have them in mind early.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the unit, ready for you to check.
  4. We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Ask for a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.
