TV and media units in Foxbury, Bromley

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on TV and media units in Foxbury starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Empty alcoves beside the TV
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere

Your questions about TV and media units in Foxbury

Is Foxbury in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, Foxbury is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

I live near Sidcup station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Will the cables be hidden?

That’s the aim, and it is planned from the start. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

TV and media units in Foxbury: what you get

Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar usually sits just below the TV, while larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors, so we plan open spaces for them. Most enquiries start with cables trailing across the wall and a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In many houses from the 1950s and 1960s, the living room has a wide window and a plain chimney breast or none at all. Many homes around Foxbury date from those decades, so TV and media units are often planned to give the room a focal point. Low cupboards with shelves over them can sit beside or below the window, leaving any radiator clear.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Decide where you will sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished

After setting up, check that the boxes are not getting too warm. Do not block the gaps and openings left for air with cables or clutter.

Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit, and don’t overload sockets.

Why people ask for TV and media units in Foxbury

Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. A built-in unit around the chimney breast lets it sit more quietly, rather than the focus of it.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • A cabinet that traps heat
  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • A big screen that dominates the wall

If you live near Chislehurst Common, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

What to check before you book

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Is bespoke worth it?

Not every bought cabinet allows enough air for warm equipment. We plan ventilation for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, with open backs, gaps or vented doors. In a flat with stairs or a small lift, large flat-pack units can be hard to get in, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections sized for the way in. The sections are joined once inside.

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Foxbury homes and TV and media units

About 30% of the homes in the streets around Foxbury went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 23% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Foxbury include Frogpool Manor Farm (Grade II), under half a mile east, and Rose Cottage (Grade II), less than half a mile south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home in Foxbury is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

For a family home near Chislehurst School for Girls, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live in a flat close to Sidcup station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fixing into concrete takes a heavy-duty drill and makes some noise, so a word with the neighbours before fitting day can help. We work within any rules your building has on noise and hours. We tidy as we go.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

How to get a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
