Walk-in wardrobes in Longlands

Walk-in wardrobes in Longlands: what you get

We fit walk-in wardrobes in Longlands and across London. It starts with a design visit to measure and plan the layout, then a written quote. Everything is built in our workshop and fitted in your home. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Typical reasons to get in touch are setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and moving wardrobes out of the bedroom; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Longlands, bedrooms usually have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold, from long coats to shoes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers, including any dressing table.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build everything in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Longlands

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 39% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Longlands, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Longlands, 7 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Bexley is inside it. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Longlands. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

Close to Waring Park? Keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. For families living near Longlands Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Longlands is part of the London Borough of Bexley, about 1 mile east of Sidcup. We cover Longlands as part of our work across Bexley, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Longlands is one of 27 places on our list for Bexley.

Design visits and fitting in DA15, DA14 and SE9 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. You’ll find streets here like Main Road, Alder Road and Sidcup Road, and we cover homes on all of them for walk-in wardrobes. Longlands sits close to the A211. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover the places around Longlands: Foxbury (1 mile south), New Eltham (1 mile north-west), Chislehurst (1 mile south-west), Coldharbour (1 mile west) and Blackfen (1 mile north). We also make walk-in wardrobes in nearby places like Welling (2 miles north-east), Erith (5 miles north-east), Bexley (2 miles east), Belvedere (5 miles north-east), Northumberland Heath (5 miles north-east) and Lessness Heath (5 miles north-east).

Around Longlands

Our area takes in the homes around Chislehurst School for Girls and Ye Olde Black Horse Inn. Longlands’s nearest station is New Eltham station, roughly 0.8 miles north-west of the centre. A little further out are Metropolitan Police Museum (0.8 miles east) and Queen Mary's Hospital (1 mile south-east). Open spaces near Longlands include The Tarn.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Longlands

Some people want a calmer bedroom. With clothes in a dressing room, the bedroom can feel more restful.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom
  • Somewhere to sit and get ready
  • A side each for a couple
  • Shelves for shoes and bags

If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.

What affects the price in Longlands

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Before the design visit

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Examples of the look you’re after

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Could you do it yourself?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Longlands?

Yes. Longlands is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bexley and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

Does a conservation area in or near Longlands affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.
