TV and media units in New Eltham: what you get

Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes and the cable route behind it. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit, with the cables kept out of sight. People normally come to us about space for a soundbar and speakers and a tangle of wires behind the TV; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Lots of semis and interwar houses have been extended at the back or had the back rooms knocked through, and around New Eltham, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. A long through room gives TV and media units a whole wall to work with. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Caring for painted furniture

People planning TV and media units often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets
  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
  • Note the screen size you have or plan to buy

Clean the paintwork with a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.

Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit.

How we price TV and media units

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The width and height of the space
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit.

Before the design visit

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You send us some details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it is useful to have them in mind early.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the unit, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, with openings for cables and air.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Getting a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Built-in living-room furniture in New Eltham

In the neighbourhood around New Eltham, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 59%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. New Eltham is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in New Eltham, as it does anywhere else in London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Southend House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses such as Eltham Palace, about 1.1 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If you live near Elmstead Wood, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Plinths and scribe strips

Period walls typically need scribing. It makes the unit look built in.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for panels, doors and the faces you see.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Not every bought cabinet allows enough air for warm equipment. We plan ventilation for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, with open backs, gaps or vented doors. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

Why choose us

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
  • Every quote follows a design visit
