TV and media units in New Cross, Lewisham

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on TV and media units in New Cross starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Boxes and consoles on the floor
  • Wasted space around the screen
  • Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room

How fitting works for TV and media units

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Before fitting day, we check the route in along with the room itself, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Ask for a quote

To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a quote in writing follows.

About our TV and media units in New Cross

If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit. If you are living with cables trailing across the wall and clutter around the TV, TV and media units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Windows, doors, radiators and sockets decide where furniture can and can’t go. Whatever kind of home you have in New Cross, TV and media units are planned around those first. Then the cupboards, shelves and any space for a screen are arranged for how you use the room.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

TV and media units for homes in New Cross

In the area around New Cross, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 43%) and the years since 2000 (about 19%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 30 entries within half a mile of the centre of New Cross. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and TV and media units can be designed to work around them. About 47% of households in the area around New Cross live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If your home is one of the older houses near St James's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. Near listed buildings like Public Library, under half a mile east of the centre of New Cross, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Why people ask for TV and media units in New Cross

Games, controllers and remotes need a home. Cupboards and drawers in the unit keep them in one place, and open shelves hold what’s used every day.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Empty alcoves beside the TV
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • A cabinet that traps heat
  • Cables trailing across the wall

For families living near Myatt Garden Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

What to check before you book

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

TVs keep getting bigger, and a stand chosen for today’s set may not suit the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind if you expect to upgrade. A standard unit is the same in every home, whatever the room is like, while fitted furniture is drawn for the room it goes into. The finish is chosen to suit the space.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What you get with us

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf or how to compare quotes.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

FAQs: TV and media units in New Cross

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in New Cross?

Yes, New Cross is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lewisham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Let us know about access early
  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote

After setting up, check that the boxes are not getting too warm. Keep vents, gaps and open backs clear of cables and clutter.

Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit, and do not daisy-chain adaptors.
