Hither Green TV and Media Units
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on TV and media units in Hither Green starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- A big screen that dominates the wall
- Speakers muffled behind doors
- A TV stand that does not fit the wall

How fitting works for TV and media units
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit, and where the sockets are now.
- We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
- The unit is made in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment.
How to prepare
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
How to get a quote
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, message us from the contact page. You receive a written quote after the visit.

TV and media units in Hither Green: what you get
We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. You choose a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you prefer. We work across London, including Hither Green. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about space for a soundbar and speakers and somewhere to keep games tidy.
In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Hither Green, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Caring for painted furniture
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Let us know about parking and access at the design visit
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
- Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
- Talk to your electrician early about sockets
After setting up, check that the boxes are not getting too warm. Don’t block the gaps and openings left for air with cables or clutter.
Tag each lead at both ends to make future changes easier.
What it is made from
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers keep controllers and games tidy close to hand. Fronts are painted to match the unit.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly and leaves no brush marks. The colour is agreed before we start.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

How we price TV and media units
There is no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The number of doors and drawers
- Spray painting or hand painting
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Getting in touch
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- How you want to use the space
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.
TV and media units in Hither Green: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hither Green were built before 1919 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Hither Green, Historic England’s list includes Lee Public Library (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Church of St Swithun (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. We will plan where the van can stop.
For families living near Brindishe Manor School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live near Manor House Gardens, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. Queen's House, about 2 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
Hither Green is part of the London Borough of Lewisham, about 2 miles north-west of New Cross. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Hither Green is part of that. We cover places right across Lewisham, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.
Every home in SE13, SE12 and SE6 is covered for TV and media units. If your home is on a street like Old Road, Manor Lane and Pascoe Road, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for TV and media units. Neighbouring places we cover for TV and media units include Lee (1 mile east), Ladywell (1 mile west), Lewisham (1 mile north-west), Catford (1 mile south-west) and Horn Park (1 mile east). We also make TV and media units in nearby places such as New Cross (2 miles north-west), St Johns (2 miles north-west), Deptford (2 miles north-west), Surrey Canal (3 miles north-west), Sydenham (3 miles south-west) and Telegraph Hill (2 miles north-west).

Your questions about TV and media units in Hither Green
Is parking a problem for fitting in Hither Green?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in Hither Green?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. TV and media units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do TV units need ventilation?
Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Keep the vents clear once it is in use.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.
Where should speakers go in a TV unit?
Speakers work best in open spaces rather than behind doors. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen with open bays for bigger speakers. Bring the sizes to the design visit.
Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?
Where the TV is to be wall-mounted, we plan the unit around the bracket. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket so we check the wall at the measuring visit.
