Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Hiding the cables is often the main aim. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with holes, channels and access panels so leads can be added or changed later. We make the routes, and your electrician handles any wiring. If you’re living with boxes with no ventilation and equipment with nowhere proper to go, that is what TV and media units are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Every room has its fixed points: the window, the door, the radiator and the sockets. In any home in Lewisham, those set the layout for TV and media units before anything else. Then the cupboards, shelves and any space for a screen are arranged for how you use the room.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so let us know what’s near you during the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure and discuss the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

How to get a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Living-room carpentry in Lewisham: local notes

About 37% of the homes in the streets around Lewisham went up before 1919, and about 32% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Lewisham, Historic England’s list includes St Mary's Vicarage (Grade II*), under half a mile south-west, and Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 20% of households in the neighbourhood around Lewisham, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

For an older house near St Stephen's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a family home near St Saviour's Catholic Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Lewisham is about 1 mile north-west of New Cross, part of the London Borough of Lewisham. We cover Lewisham as part of our work across the rest of London, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We cover places right across the rest of London, large and small.

Do you need TV and media units in Lewisham?

Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. Building it into the alcoves or around the chimney breast makes it part of the room, rather than the focus of it.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Empty alcoves beside the TV
  • Speakers muffled behind doors
  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard

The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 1.4 miles north. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Questions from Lewisham

Do you cover homes near Lewisham station?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Lewisham?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

How do I get a quote?

The first step is to use our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go. Keep the vents clear once it is in use.

What affects the price of TV and media units?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Honest limits

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

Birch plywood

A wide shelf under the TV needs stiffness. Birch plywood, sized for the span, keeps it flat.

Shelves

Long shelves need the right thickness or a support.
