TV and media units for homes in Sydenham
A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That job is for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. Ideally it’s done before the unit goes in. We make TV and media units from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about clutter around the TV and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste.
Where housing types are mixed, as they are in much of London, living rooms can be very different from one street to the next. You might have alcoves, a bay, a wide open-plan room or a compact one. TV and media units are designed for the room in Sydenham that you have, with shelves sized so they don’t sag.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

How we price TV and media units
The price for your room depends on:
- How many doors and drawers there are
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How square the room is
- Parking and unloading on your street
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Before the design visit
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
Fitting day, step by step
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift along with the room itself, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment.
How to prepare
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
- Clear the area where the furniture is going

Living-room carpentry in Sydenham: local notes
About 40% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Sydenham went up before 1919, and about 28% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 16 entries within half a mile of the centre of Sydenham. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 28% of homes in the streets around Sydenham were built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so a full wall of TV and media units is often the answer, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.
For an older house near Church of St Bartholomew, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. For a flat near Sydenham station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to Kirkdale School or a school nearby, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Questions we are often asked
My home in Sydenham is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Sydenham?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not usually. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.
How long will the fitting take?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.
Practical tips
These points come up often when people plan TV and media units. They help whatever the room:
- Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
- Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
- Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
After setting up, check that the boxes are not getting too warm. Keep vents, gaps and open backs clear of cables and clutter.
Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear.
What it is made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
There’s no grain to show through the paint, so a painted TV unit looks calm and even. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.
Spray-painted finish
The unit arrives already finished. Treat it gently while the paint cures fully.
