Loft storage in New Cross, Lewisham

In New Cross, we design loft storage around the room you actually have. We design your eaves cupboard at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A loft room that still feels unfinished
  • Standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs
  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes

Loft storage in New Cross

Loft storage for homes in New Cross

We make each eaves cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the carcasses and drawers their strength, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. It’s then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in New Cross. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom and an empty dormer that could hold shelves.

Wherever your home in New Cross sits in London’s mix of housing, there’s often a corner or recess not doing much. That space can take fitted storage, laid out for what you need to keep. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
  • Think about how you’ll reach into the eaves
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

We open each door and run each drawer with you before we go. If there is an access door to the eaves, we make sure it opens fully. You’ll know it all works as it should.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Insulation pressed flat does not do its job. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

The problems loft storage solve

A loft room used as an office or guest room often needs storage too. Storage in the eaves leaves the main floor clear.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A converted loft with no fitted furniture
  • Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving
  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Public Library, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Loft storage in New Cross: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around New Cross were built before 1919 (about 43%) and since 2000 (about 19%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of New Cross, 11 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 24% of households in the streets around New Cross live in flats in converted or shared houses, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 1.5 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. For an older house near St James's Church, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

Common questions about loft storage

My home in New Cross is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do you cover homes near New Cross station?

Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

How is loft storage priced?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The mix of cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and the finish, all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

Why bespoke in New Cross?

Off-the-shelf furniture is made for straight walls and full-height ceilings. In a loft room, standard pieces leave awkward gaps under the slope. Storage made for the loft follows its shape. It costs more than off-the-shelf furniture, and what you gain is the space a standard piece can’t reach. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Why choose us

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
  3. Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
