Living-room carpentry in Romford: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 32% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Romford, with about 30% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Romford include Parish Church of St Edward the Confessor (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and The Golden Lion Public House (Grade II), under half a mile north. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Newer homes are more common around Romford than across Havering: about 30% date from 2000 onwards, against about 13%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.

For families living near Concordia Academy, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. Hare Hall, about 1.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a flat close to Romford station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

About our TV and media units in Romford

Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes. If the TV stands on the unit instead, the top is sized and positioned for it. People typically come to us about cables trailing across the wall and bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In an area like Romford, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits TV and media units along that wall. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting works for TV and media units

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Before fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Getting a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Related advice

Before and after fitting day

People planning TV and media units often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Think about which things need to be seen by a remote
  • Tell us about parking and access during the design visit

Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Hinges can usually be adjusted to line them up again.

Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves, and no single shelf overloaded.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Questions from Romford

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Romford?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live near Romford station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

How much will my TV unit cost?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

Is there room for a soundbar?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, and larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.

Can the TV unit fit a bigger TV later?

The space can be sized for a larger TV, if you expect to upgrade. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

Pricing TV and media units in Romford

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Parking near your home
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The number of doors and drawers

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

These details help when you contact us:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

What TV and media units cannot fix

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
