Ask about TV and media units in Upminster Bridge

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought units come in the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

TV and media units in Upminster Bridge

A built-in TV unit gives the screen, the boxes, the speakers and the cables one planned home. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. If you are planning a TV unit in Upminster Bridge, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. Typical reasons to get in touch are set-top boxes stacked on a stand and nowhere good for speakers; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Upminster Bridge, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. TV and media units can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically simple, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. TV and media units arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. A written quote follows for the unit.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Questions from Upminster Bridge

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Upminster Bridge?

Yes, Upminster Bridge is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Havering and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Upminster Bridge?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

How do I get a quote?

It’s easiest to send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What it’s made from

Doors and drawer fronts

Many remote controls need a clear view of the box, so we may leave those shelves open.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF has no grain to show through, so a painted TV unit looks calm and even. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.

When you need someone else

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Painting the walls and ceiling

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. All of London, Havering included, is inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Upminster Bridge is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Laurence, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your children go to Sacred Heart of Mary Girls' School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. For a flat near Upminster station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
