About TV and media units in Havering

In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books, with the TV in one alcove or on the chimney breast. Any chimney vent is kept clear. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wasted space around the screen and leads that show from every angle.

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

What goes into your quote

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.

Why work with us

  • Designed for the room you have
  • Work across the whole of London
  • A spray or hand-painted finish

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Living-room carpentry across Havering

Across Havering, from Romford, Hornchurch and Gallows Corner outwards, we design and fit TV and media units. The walls behind TV and media units vary with the age of the home, so fixings are checked at the measuring visit. Shelf spans and depths are chosen so nothing bows.

About 36% of the homes in Havering went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 35% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Around a third of the homes in Havering (about 36%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, which shape where TV and media units go. Around a third of the homes in Havering (about 35%) were built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so a full wall of TV and media units is often the answer, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.

We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and Havering is part of that. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and go through the design.

Romford: The wider area includes historic houses like Hare Hall, about 1.4 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. Close to Lodge Farm Park? TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

When is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What it’s made from

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits a TV unit in a period room. You choose the colour.

Shelves

Open shelves suit speakers and things you want on show, while cupboards hide the rest.

What we do not do

Not everything around TV and media units is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Plastering or decorating around the unit
  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment

Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Let us know about access early
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it
  • Think about which things need to be seen by a remote

After setting up, check that the boxes aren’t getting too warm. Do not block the gaps and openings left for air with cables or clutter.

Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear as things change.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

The fitting depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Will the cables be hidden?

We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.
