How we make TV and media units for Greenhill

In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books leaving the TV in an alcove or on the breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. Typical reasons to get in touch are set-top boxes stacked on a stand and equipment running hot in a closed cupboard, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A large number of homes around Greenhill date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer blocks. In a compact new-build room, a shallower run of TV and media units can add storage without crowding the space. Boxing for pipes and risers is common in newer homes, and the furniture can be designed around it.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the TV unit we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it is finished.

Why people ask for TV and media units in Greenhill

Boxes, consoles and routers on the floor are a familiar sight. A unit gives every box its own space, with air to keep it cool, and keeps the floor clear.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • A TV stand that does not fit the wall
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John the Baptist, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

What to check before you book

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Harrow-on-the-Hill station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Greenhill?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Is there room for a soundbar?

Speakers work best in open spaces rather than behind doors. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

Media equipment runs warm and needs airflow. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go. Keep the vents clear once it is in use.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

How fitting works for TV and media units

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the unit.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

How to prepare

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Let us know about parking and access during the design visit

After setting up, check that the boxes aren’t getting too warm. Don’t block the gaps and openings left for air with cables or clutter.

Avoid piling devices on one shelf. Each one needs space around it.

TV and media units for homes in Greenhill

In the neighbourhood around Greenhill, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 45%) and before 1919 (about 22%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Greenhill is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If you live near Northwick Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. Living in a block of flats near Harrow-on-the-Hill station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf TV units come in a few set colours. We paint ours in the colour you choose. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, whereas fitted furniture can define each part of the room.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.
