TV and media units for homes in South Ruislip

Hiding the cables is often the main aim. We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with holes, channels and access panels so leads can be added or changed later. We make the routes, and your electrician handles any wiring. People typically come to us about boxes with no ventilation and somewhere to keep games tidy; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A good part of the housing around South Ruislip is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, and that layout shapes where TV and media units work best. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near South Ruislip station?

Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in South Ruislip?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.

Can you plan for a future TV?

We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

The problems TV and media units solve

Open-plan living is another reason. A built-in unit gives that wall order and holds books and everyday things as well.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room
  • Boxes and consoles on the floor
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV

If you live in a flat close to South Ruislip station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Where they’ll park and unload

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Preparing the room

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Starting with a design visit

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

Practical tips

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it
  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf

After setting up, check that the boxes are not getting too warm. Don’t block the gaps and openings left for air with cables or clutter.

Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit, and do not overload sockets.

Is bespoke worth it?

A bespoke unit isn’t instant: there’s a design visit, a quote and making time. If you’re renting or moving soon, a standalone stand may suit you better. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

TV and media units for homes in South Ruislip

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 42% of the housing in the neighbourhood around South Ruislip, with about 34% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Hillingdon sets its own rules. If your street in South Ruislip is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. Tell us what the parking is like during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Northolt Manor, about 1.4 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Mary, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
