Walk-in wardrobes in Southfields, Wandsworth
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Southfields, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A use for a small spare room
- A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
- Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts

Walk-in wardrobes in Southfields: what you get
Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. If you are living with somewhere to sit and get ready and a calmer, clearer bedroom, that’s what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Southfields, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for walk-in wardrobes.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the walk-in wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
From workshop to your room
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.
- You let us know about the room.
- We come to measure and go through the design.
- A quote in writing follows.
- We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
- We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.
Before fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Starting with a design visit
To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Advice
FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Southfields
My home in Southfields is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Walk-in wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
My home in Southfields is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do I choose the paint colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not usually. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
What walk-in wardrobes cannot fix
It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Damp treatment or repairs
- New lights or sockets
- Building a new partition wall

Tips worth knowing
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Think about where shoes and bags will go
- Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
- Deal with any damp walls first
- Have a clear-out before we measure
If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth.
Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. We can’t advise on your lease.
Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Southfields
Homes built before 1919 make up about 57% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Southfields, with about 14% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 6 entries within half a mile of the centre of Southfields. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 23% of households in the neighbourhood around Southfields live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
For a flat near Earlsfield station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Earlsfield House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Close to King George's Park? Keeping walk-in wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in Southfields
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- The internal fittings
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
What we need to know
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, message us from the contact page with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
