Bespoke kitchens for your home in Strawberry Hill

About our bespoke kitchens in Strawberry Hill

We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe registered engineer and electrics by your electrician, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. If your home has making the most of a galley kitchen and more storage in a small kitchen, that is what kitchens are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

An older kitchen often has a sash window and a back door, which fix where things can go. With a large share of the homes around Strawberry Hill built before 1919, the cabinets are planned around the windows and doors you have. Your plumber connects the sink where the design puts it. The worktop, sink and appliances are your choice.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Bespoke kitchens in Strawberry Hill: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Strawberry Hill, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Strawberry Hill include Chapel in the Wood (Grade I), under half a mile south-west, and Underground passage at Radnor Lodge (Grade II*), under half a mile north. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. More than a third of the homes in the area around Strawberry Hill (about 47%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Older houses often have narrow kitchens at the back, with floors that slope, so cabinets are scribed and levelled on site.

If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity Church, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. Strawberry Hill House, about 0.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. Living in a block of flats near Strawberry Hill station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

What affects the cost of bespoke kitchens

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Share the layout with your other trades
  • Make sure an island will not crowd the room
  • Make a note of what you use every day
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Follow the appliance makers’ guidance for your oven, hob and dishwasher, and the care advice for your worktop.

Damp walls should be dealt with before cabinets are fitted. Damp behind units can lead to mould, particularly on a colder external wall.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so kitchens are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the kitchen.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through the layout, larder, dresser or island, where space allows.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The kitchen is made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

My home in Strawberry Hill is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Strawberry Hill?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

What are your kitchens made from?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for drawer boxes and shelves. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in colours agreed with you.

Can you build an island in my kitchen?

If the room is big enough, yes. At the design visit we check the clearances around it. If it would crowd the kitchen, we’ll say so.

Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?

No, that work is for other trades. Your plumber connects the sink and dishwasher, a Gas Safe registered engineer handles any gas, and your electrician does the wiring, and we fit the cabinets.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
