TV and media units in West Barnes, Merton

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on TV and media units in West Barnes starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

How we make TV and media units for West Barnes

Set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers give off heat, so equipment cannot simply be shut in a closed cupboard. We plan ventilation into the unit, using open backs, gaps or openings where equipment sits. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. Typical reasons to get in touch are cables trailing across the wall and a cabinet that traps heat; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around West Barnes, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, TV and media units can run the full length of one wall, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

Questions from West Barnes

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in West Barnes?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Is West Barnes in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, West Barnes is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Merton and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The unit is made in our workshop first.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, with open backs, gaps or openings. Each box should have its own space.

Can you plan for a future TV?

If you are likely to upgrade, we can leave room for it. It’s useful to know the size you are thinking of so the space and cable routes suit it.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for a smooth, factory-like finish that suits clean, modern lines.

Doors and drawer fronts

Many remote controls need a clear view of the box.

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Is bespoke worth it?

Some closed off-the-shelf cabinets have little ventilation. Ventilation is designed in where equipment sits. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You let us know about the room and what the unit needs to hold, from set-top boxes to speakers.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. If anything in it is unclear, ask us.
  4. We then make the unit in our workshop, with cable routes planned in.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, ready for your equipment, with the cable routes left clear.
