TV and media units for homes in Willesden Green

Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar usually sits just below the TV, and larger speakers can go on open shelves either side. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors. We make TV and media units from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about set-top boxes stacked on a stand and bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room.

Rooms in houses from before 1919 tend to have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Willesden Green date from then. That gives full-height TV and media units room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

What we don’t do

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Connecting the TV signal or internet
  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Cable routes
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.

Questions from Willesden Green

How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in Willesden Green?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Willesden Green?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How fitting works for TV and media units

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Why bespoke in Willesden Green?

Bought units come in the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.
