About our TV and media units in Willesden

The screen size comes first. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about nowhere good for speakers and a big screen that dominates the wall.

In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Willesden, lots of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Before and after fitting day

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
  • Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home

After setting up, check that the boxes are not getting too warm. Keep vents, gaps and open backs clear of cables and clutter.

Don’t stack boxes on top of each other in one space, as they trap each other’s heat. Give each its own space.

TV and media units in Willesden: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 60% of the housing in the area around Willesden, with about 15% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Willesden is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Brent is no exception. If your road in Willesden falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

If you live near Roundwood Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Andrew, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For a family home near St Andrew and St Francis CofE Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Willesden is within the London Borough of Brent, about 2 miles south-east of Kilburn. Whether your home in Willesden is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Our work takes in places right across Brent, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Postcode districts we cover here for TV and media units: NW10 and NW2. We cover homes on streets like Tudor Mews, Chaplin Road and Belton Road, along with the roads around them, for TV and media units and any of our other fitted furniture. The B453 runs close to Willesden; on busy main roads, unloading TV and media units takes a little planning. If you are just outside Willesden, we also cover Willesden Green (1 mile south), Neasden (1 mile north-west), Church End (1 mile west), Cricklewood (1 mile north-east) and Harlesden (1 mile south-west). Elsewhere in Brent, we also cover Kilburn (2 miles south-east), Wembley (3 miles west), Queen's Park (2 miles south-east), Kenton (4 miles north-west), Alperton (3 miles west) and North Wembley (3 miles west).

Flats, conversions and lettings

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

Questions we are often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Willesden affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live in a flat in Willesden. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

The fitting depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables, and if it stands on the unit we size the top for it.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Pricing TV and media units in Willesden

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • How square the room is
  • The internal fittings
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking near your home

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you see the colour in the room’s own light. Joins and scribed edges are painted at the same time.

Doors and drawer fronts

Some equipment needs line of sight for its remote.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. You get a written quote covering the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
