Harlesden TV and Media Units
Planning TV and media units for a home in Harlesden? We start with a design visit and a written quote.

- Boxes with no ventilation
TV and media units designed for your room
Tips worth knowing
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:
- Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
- Think about whether you will upgrade the screen
- Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them to avoid marks.
Don’t stack boxes on top of each other in one space. Give each its own space.
TV and media units for homes in Harlesden
Cables are the part most people want to hide. We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with holes, channels and access panels so leads can be added or changed later. The routes are ours, while any wiring is for your electrician. If your home has a cabinet that traps heat and nowhere good for speakers, TV and media units made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and internal walls may be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Harlesden built before 1919, the wall type is checked before any fixing for TV and media units is chosen. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Harlesden homes and TV and media units
Homes built before 1919 make up about 52% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Harlesden, with about 32% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Harlesden include Church of All Souls (Grade II*), under half a mile south, and Church of Our Lady of Willesden (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 48% of households in the neighbourhood around Harlesden live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
For a family home near John Keble CofE Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. Living in a block of flats near Willesden Junction station? Then it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live near Roundwood Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Screen sizes change, and a stand chosen for today’s set may not suit the next. We can leave room for a larger screen. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

What happens on fitting day
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
- We visit to measure and go through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
- You get a written quote covering the design, the materials and the finish.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room.
How to prepare
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Tell us about parking near your home
Ask for a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

What it costs
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:
- The internal fittings
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Spray painting or hand painting
- The number of doors and drawers
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
Getting in touch
When you contact us, these help most:
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- How you want to use the space
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, use our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
FAQs: TV and media units in Harlesden
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Harlesden?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
My house in Harlesden is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease, so check it or ask your managing agent.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
It’s made in sections, sized for the route not just the room. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.
Where should speakers go in a TV unit?
Speakers and soundbars get open shelves sized for them. Closed doors muffle sound.
Do you fit furniture for landlords?
Yes. We make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let as well as for householders. Access has to be agreed with the tenants for the visit and for fitting day.
