How fitting works for TV and media units
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. TV and media units arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- You send us a few details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use.
- We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
- The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Starting with a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

TV and media units in Kidbrooke
In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books, with the TV in one alcove or on the chimney breast. Any chimney vent is kept clear. People usually come to us about a screen at the wrong height and boxes and consoles on the floor, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
A good part of the housing around Kidbrooke is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where TV and media units sit. Walls in houses of that age are typically straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Living-room carpentry in Kidbrooke: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Kidbrooke, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 60%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 13%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Kidbrooke is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 43% of households in the area around Kidbrooke, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Barnabas, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Coronet Cinema, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For a family home near Henwick Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

When is bespoke worth it?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Looking after your furniture
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit
- Think about which things need to be seen by a remote
- Talk to your electrician early about sockets
- List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
Vents and equipment shelves gather dust, so clean them now and then. It keeps air moving.
Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit, and don’t daisy-chain adaptors.
What it is made from
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting lets you see the colour in the room’s own light. Scribed edges are painted along with the rest.
Spray-painted finish
The unit arrives already finished. Give the paint time to cure fully.

Flats, conversions and lettings
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
Questions we’re often asked
Do you cover homes near Kidbrooke station?
Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Do photos help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can you add sockets behind the TV?
Electrical work isn’t something we do. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
