Window seats in Woolwich, Greenwich
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on window seats in Woolwich starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- A bay with no furniture that fits
- A child’s room that needs storage and seating
- Unused space below a sash window

Practical tips
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Plan the cushion early so the seat suits it
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
- Think about what you’ll store under the seat
Wiping the seat with a soft, damp cloth is usually all it needs. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The front edge picks up marks first.
Keep the radiator grille clear so the heat can reach the room. Keeping it clear helps the radiator work as it should. Storage over a radiator stays warm, so it’s best for things that do not mind it.
Window seats for homes in Woolwich
A window seat can be part of a larger piece of furniture. Shelving on each side, with the seat in the middle, makes a natural reading spot. We design the seat and the surrounding units together, so the lines and the finish match. We can talk through the options when we visit in Woolwich. If your home has a sash window with space beneath it going to waste and no space for toys and games, window seats made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Most homes around Woolwich are purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to newer blocks. Mansion block flats often have long hallways, bays and high ceilings that suit fitted storage, while modern flats often have short halls and service boxing to work around. If you have a maisonette or duplex, the stairs can take storage too.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Window seats in Woolwich: local notes
In the area around Woolwich, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 31%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Woolwich is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Purpose-built flats are home to about 61% of households in the neighbourhood around Woolwich, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 2.9 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. For a family home near Mulgrave Primary School, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Living in a block of flats near Woolwich Dockyard station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Woolwich is about 1 mile east of Plumstead, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Anywhere in Woolwich, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across Greenwich, large and small.
Every address in SE18, E16 and SE7 is covered for window seats. Whether you live on a street like Market Street, Woolwich High Street and Beresford Square Market Place or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for window seats. We also cover the places around Woolwich: Plumstead (1 mile east), Charlton (1 mile west), New Charlton (1 mile west), Shooter's Hill (1 mile south) and Kidbrooke (2 miles south-west). Elsewhere in Greenwich, we also cover Greenwich (3 miles west), Eltham (3 miles south), Well Hall (2 miles south), Maze Hill (3 miles west), Coldharbour (4 miles south) and New Eltham (4 miles south). Being one of the larger places in Greenwich, Woolwich is covered for window seats and everything else we make.

What affects the cost of window seats
The price for your room depends on:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Parking and unloading on your street
- How many doors and drawers there are
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Before the design visit
A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- What the furniture needs to hold
To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.
From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.
- First we hear about your bay or window and what you’d like, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
- At the design visit, every side of the window is measured.
- We agree the seat, the storage and the finish, and send a quote in writing. Take your time with it.
- The seat is built in our workshop and painted in your colour.
- The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you.
Before fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
Getting a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

What it is made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF can be cut cleanly, which suits the angled panels of a bay and the pattern of a grille. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see on the finished seat is MDF.
Doors and drawer fronts
The fronts of a window seat are what you see most. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. Where needed, a grille is part of the front.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A ready-made bench is built for a flat wall and a square corner, and bay windows rarely offer either. A bench in a bay leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space at the corners. A seat made for the window follows every angle. It is a bigger investment, and the gain is a seat that fits the space. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, so storage is lost at the top. Built-in pieces use the full height.
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote.

Questions we are often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Woolwich?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you make window seats for a home in Woolwich?
Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London, and Woolwich is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
