Under-stairs storage designed for your room

About our under-stairs storage in Belsize Park

Some under-stairs spaces are open enough for a small desk. A built-in desk with shelving and drawers can turn the space into a quiet corner for paperwork. Any new socket or light there is for your electrician, and we leave room and a route for the cable. It’s worth talking through at the measuring visit in Belsize Park. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags and a sloping corner nobody can reach.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace typically has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. Around Belsize Park, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it is useful to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store, such as coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards.
  3. We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing.
  4. Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The way to any meters is left clear.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Advice

Flats, conversions and lettings

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. Each one is sized for what it will hold, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Making use of tricky spaces in Belsize Park

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Belsize Park were built before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Belsize Park, Historic England’s list includes Belsize Fire Station (Grade II*), less than half a mile west, and Church of St Silas the Martyr (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Camden included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Belsize Park. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

For a flat near South Hampstead station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For a family home near Fine Arts College, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Mary the Virgin, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

What to send when you get in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Questions we’re often asked

My home in Belsize Park is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to South Hampstead station?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Do photos help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How is under-stairs storage priced?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. It varies with the size of the space, how many drawers and doors you want, and the finish. To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.
