How we make under-stairs storage for South Hampstead

In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. Here the doors, drawer fronts and finish matter as much as the storage behind them. We can make plain or panelled fronts, painted to sit with the walls or to stand out. In South Hampstead or anywhere else, the aim is storage that looks considered, not added on. If your home has a sloping corner nobody can reach and struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are typically solid brick, which can be cold, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. A large share of the homes around South Hampstead date from then. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You tell us about the space under the stairs.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you will use the space.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Ask for a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Under-stairs storage for homes in South Hampstead

The biggest shares of homes in the area around South Hampstead were built before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. There are 125 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of South Hampstead. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 57% of households in the neighbourhood around South Hampstead, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For a flat near South Hampstead station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to The UCL Academy or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. The wider area includes historic houses like Winfield House, about 0.9 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Questions we’re often asked

Does a conservation area in or near South Hampstead affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is South Hampstead in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London, and South Hampstead is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?

How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Flats, leases and landlords

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once it is fitted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for the angled panels that follow the stairs. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which stays stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.

What it costs

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The width and height of the space
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
