Fitted cupboards in Belsize Park, Camden

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted cupboards in Belsize Park starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner

Where other trades come in

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)
  • Making good walls after other work

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Fitted cupboards in Belsize Park: what you get

Walls in period homes are rarely flat or square, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are cut around or met neatly, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are using the full height of a room and a neat cupboard around the boiler.

Around Belsize Park, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and houses of that age are full of awkward spaces: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Fitted cupboards in Belsize Park: local notes

About 46% of the homes in the streets around Belsize Park went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Belsize Park, 15 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 30% of households in the area around Belsize Park live in flats in converted or shared houses, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Keats House, about 0.8 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. Near listed buildings like Belsize Fire Station, less than half a mile west of the centre of Belsize Park, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Belsize Park is in the London Borough of Camden, about 2 miles south-east of St Pancras. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Belsize Park is part of that. Our Camden coverage includes Belsize Park.

In NW3, NW5 and NW1, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. You’ll find streets here such as Eton Road, Lawn Road and Ornan Road, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted cupboards. Across the rest of Camden, our area takes in St Pancras (2 miles south-east), West End (3 miles south-east), St Giles (3 miles south-east), Seven Dials (3 miles south-east), Holborn (3 miles south-east) and Bloomsbury (2 miles south-east).

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Belsize Park

I live near South Hampstead station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.

Can you fit fitted cupboards to the uneven walls of an older house in Belsize Park?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The size, the inside layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so check it or ask your managing agent.

Fitting day, step by step

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the cupboards we’ve agreed.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Getting a quote

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Belsize Park

Most people come to us because things have nowhere to go. Coats end up over the banister and shoes spread across the hall. A cupboard built for the space gives everything a place and clears the floor.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Storage in a corner nothing else fits
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
  • Landing shelves for bedding and towels

If you live near Primrose Hill, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

What to check before you book

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The width and height of the space

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, then set it out in the quote.

Before the design visit

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Your postcode and the borough

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, use our contact form.

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

For a smooth, even look, spray painting is a good choice, and it’s done before the cupboards reach your home.

Doors and drawer fronts

For meter cupboards, the doors or panels are designed for easy access for engineers and meter readers.
