Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Bromley

You don’t need a spare room to have a walk-in wardrobe. A corner or one end of a large bedroom can become a dressing area, with doors or left open. Any new partition wall is for your builder, while we make and fit the furniture. If you’re living with storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe and somewhere for shoes to live, walk-in wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Many homes around Bromley were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are compact flats in newer blocks. In a compact bedroom, fitted furniture that reaches the ceiling and uses the corners makes the most difference. Boxed-in pipes and service risers can be built around, so nothing is wasted.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Questions from Bromley

Is Bromley in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Bromley is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

In many cases, yes. It depends on the room’s shape and where the door and window sit, so we work it out when we measure.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Could you do it yourself?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Tips worth knowing

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Think about where shoes and bags will go
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Count your coats and long garments

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth.

If the room is on an external wall, have any damp sorted first. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, so we allow for ventilation.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. We start with the room you have in mind and what needs a home. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. You get a written quote for the design we have agreed, for you to read through.
  4. The units are built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit. To book one, use our contact form.

Advice

Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Bromley?

The most common reason is simply running out of wardrobe space. Clothes are squashed together and shoes pile up. A dressing room spreads it all out so you can see it.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A walk-in wardrobe in a box room
  • Proper shoe storage
  • Room for two wardrobes in one space
  • More space for clothes and shoes

Near listed buildings like Tide Mill (known As the House Mill), less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Bromley, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

What it is made from

Birch plywood

Shelves that carry piles of clothes need a strong board, and birch plywood helps.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF stays flat and paints beautifully, in any colour you choose.

Bedrooms in Bromley: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Bromley, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 52%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. 19 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Bromley. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. All of London, Tower Hamlets included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Bromley fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Bow Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. For families living near St Agnes RC Primary School, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.
