Window seats in Canning Town
About our window seats in Canning Town
Many windows have a radiator beneath them. A seat built over a radiator needs a grille or an open front, so the heat is not trapped. We design the grille into the front of the seat and leave space around the radiator. We’ll look at your radiator at the measuring visit in Canning Town. Typical reasons to get in touch are a radiator under the window getting in the way and a sash window with space beneath it going to waste; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Many homes around Canning Town have been built since 2000, and newer homes often have little built-in storage. Halls, landings and the space beneath the stairs are where fitted storage can help. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so the fixings are chosen for that.
A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

When is bespoke worth it?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Fitting day, step by step
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Window seats are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.
- You let us know about the window and the room, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
- We measure the window, the cill and any radiator or shutters. Then we talk through the seat height and storage.
- We agree the seat, the storage and the finish, and send a written quote. Take your time with it.
- Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.
Preparing the room
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Arranging a design visit
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
Making use of awkward spaces in Canning Town
In the neighbourhood around Canning Town, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 38%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Canning Town, Historic England’s list includes Warehouse K (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and Warehouse W (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Canning Town is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.
Queen's House, about 2.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. Close to Keir Hardie Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.
Canning Town is within the London Borough of Newham, about 1 mile north of Plaistow. Wherever you are in Canning Town, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Canning Town is one of 26 places on our list for Newham.

Flats, leases and landlords
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
Practical tips
People planning window seats often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:
- Consider how often you will reach for what’s stored
- Note whether your window has working shutters
- Check whether there is a radiator under the window
- Decide on cushion thickness before the design visit
Once the seat is fitted, it’s ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid placing heavy objects on the painted surfaces while it hardens.
Don’t block the grille with cushions or things stored in front of it. Keeping it clear helps the radiator work as it should. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.
Questions we are often asked
I live near Custom House station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
I live in a flat in Canning Town. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Should I send photos?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Why people ask for window seats in Canning Town
The radiator beneath a window can make it tricky to put furniture there. A built-in seat with a grille lets the heat out while making the space useful. It’s a neat answer to a common problem.
If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:
- A radiator under the window getting in the way
- Looking for a reading spot by the window
- Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books
- Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay
If you live in a period home close to St Cedd's Church, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
