TV and media units for homes in Canons Park
In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above, with the TV in one alcove or on the chimney breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. If you’re living with a big screen that dominates the wall and boxes with no ventilation, TV and media units made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
A good part of the housing around Canons Park is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, and that layout shapes where TV and media units work best. Walls in houses of that age are usually straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Living-room carpentry in Canons Park: local notes
About 54% of the homes in the streets around Canons Park went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 21% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Canons Park include Church of St Lawrence (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west, and Parish Church of St Margaret (Grade II), under half a mile east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Canons Park is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Headstone Manor, about 3 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Close to Edgwarebury Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. For a flat near Mill Hill Broadway station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Canons Park is about 4 miles south-west of Harrow, part of the London Borough of Harrow. We cover Canons Park as part of our work across Harrow, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Across Harrow, we cover Canons Park.
Design visits and fitting in HA8 and HA7 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Our area takes in homes on streets like Parr Road, Mead Road and Grove Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want TV and media units or another piece made for the room. Nearby, we also make TV and media units in Little Stanmore (1 mile south-east), Edgware (1 mile north-east), Burnt Oak (1 mile east), Broadfields Estate (1 mile north-east) and The Hale (1 mile north-east). Elsewhere in Harrow, we also cover Harrow (4 miles south-west), Hatch End (4 miles west), Harrow Weald (2 miles west), Wealdstone (2 miles south-west), Greenhill (3 miles south-west) and South Harrow (4 miles south-west).

From workshop to your room
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You describe the TV wall and your equipment.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
- A quote in writing follows. If anything in it is unclear, ask us.
- We then make the unit in our workshop, with cable routes planned in.
- The unit is fitted in your home, ready for your equipment, with the cable routes left clear.
Before fitting day
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Getting a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Tips worth knowing
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it
- Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
- Think about which things need to be seen by a remote
- Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
Doors can settle a little once the unit is in use. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line them up again.
Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves.
Questions we are often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Canons Park?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do you cover homes near Mill Hill Broadway station?
Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?
Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go. Once it’s in, don’t block the gaps.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.
How do you hide the TV cables?
We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent.
